I can snap pics of my current fleet and take a video of a big engagement later.It sounds like you're not using all of the types of movement orders, yet - but you should also realize that sometimes the AI is going to be the AI, and that's part of the game. I recommend having two Capital class ships in your fleet minimum, at least two carriers, and then a mixture of destroyers/interceptors (in addition to your cargo/fuel ships). This can also draw in a few fast ships to get destroyed Typically after two or three of their capital ships are wrecked the smaller ships start dropping off, and you can start being more aggressive to wipe out the rest. When the enemy capital ships are in range of my capital ships, I start giving tactical orders (flanking, etc). I also like to hang back and let the AI come to me, like engaging somewhere in the middle and then setting a defensive point behind my "line" to reel in my faster ships. This will keep your ships from retreating prematurely. Even having something like a hammerhead escorted by a brawler/lasher/kite can make it more effective. They will be indispensable after you get them to max level.Īside from that, I would use the escort command to organize your fleet into into little "pods." Like, if you have a Conquest class, get a couple of smaller ships to escort it and they will engage the same ships the Conquest is engaging. If you're not already using officers, get a bunch of Steady and Aggressive ones on some of your harder hitting ships. I highly recommend using the simulator (N on the refit screen), and never, ever going with auto-fit. If you are losing to pirates, you may need better ships, or better builds. If your fleet likes Mexican standoffs too much, try bumping it to Aggressive. You can set the default aggression level for all your ships without officers on the Doctrine screen. I must be missing something or there must be a mod to fix this. I could just use light cruisers and fast carriers and go that route but I'll still suffer against capital ships. I have literally seen AI ships that were at my side with the same weapons fall back against a numerically inferior foe. Also my fleet often abandons me the moment I enter combat. I want to use skills and tactics in my battles, rather than brute forcing my way through smaller fleets. There doesn't seem to be any way around this as near as I can tell as the orders function is limited in number and they seem to forget the commands very quickly. However if I use the larger ships then they lag behind and almost never see combat unless they have an atlas MK III or the carriers get attacked. If I use small ships I lack the firepower to take down bigger ships without massive losses. I have a laundry list of problems with combat in this game because of the lack of options in commanding my fleet. I'm willing to bet there's a tutorial that answers my questions somewhere but I can't seem to find it.
